About

The Social Justice Action Center (SJAC) is a grassroots non-profit 501(c)3 organization that operates a community space in inner Southeast Portland, Oregon.

SJAC supports grassroots community organizing and we have several programs:

  • Managing a community space for events, meetings, and retreats
  • Hosting storage in our basement
  • Offering community events, film series, and discussions.
  • Coordinating a community commercial kitchen

SJAC prioritizes the leadership of marginalized communities, especially those of color. In particular, we recognize the sovereignty of Indigenous peoples, such as the Multnomah and other Chinookan villages of the confluence of these great rivers and the Kalapuya and Molalla peoples in the nearby hills and valleys (some of whose descendants are now part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, of Siletz, and of Warm Springs).

“After nearly twelve years, despite a relentless war of aggression waged by Turkey and ISIS, the Kurdish freedom movement, alongside the other diverse peoples of North-East Syria, continue to build and defend a sweeping social revolution rooted in the principles of direct-democracy, women’s liberation, cooperative economics, cultural pluralism, and social ecology.

How is society being organized in Rojava? What are the revolution’s achievements and challenges? How did this movement transform chaos into social revolution, and what lessons could we apply to organizing our own local communities?Join us as we discuss what is happening in Rojava, why it matters, and how we can stand in solidarity.”
