At the Social Justice Action Center we are committed to maintaining an environment that values safety, dignity, and respect for all individuals. Recently, we have been grappling with a deeply challenging and unprecedented situation that has profoundly impacted our organization and the people we serve.
In late June, we received reports that an individual involved with SJAC had engaged in sexual misconduct and abuse of power. We recognize the gravity of this situation and we take these reports very seriously. While we understand the community’s desire for more detailed information, our team has acted with integrity in addressing the concerns raised. Our priority at this time is to the survivor’s well-being and privacy.
In response to these incidents, and based on extensive investigation, we took immediate steps in early July to create a safer space within our organization. These included asking the individual in question to cease any involvement with SJAC or our programs. We are aware of the possible short-term impacts on the critical services that many of our houseless neighbors rely on, but we must prioritize the safety of our community. We have brought on new board members and volunteers to help us address these matters moving forward as we take time to reflect and learn from what has happened.
We are currently reviewing and implementing new policies and practices, including measures to prioritize the safety of vulnerable populations along with processes for documenting grievances and handling instances of misconduct swiftly and appropriately. These efforts are guided by a deep commitment to maintaining the trust of our community and ensuring that our organization continues to be a place where everyone feels safe and supported.
We appreciate your support and patience as we work through this complex situation. It requires an approach that continues to prioritize the survivor’s wishes, while also being accountable to the concerns of the broader community. We will continue to update you as we have more to share, always mindful of the need to respect the privacy and dignity of those involved.
